Rules to dress for an interview.. I can start writing about my point of view and what worked for me in the past, instead I got you one of the best HR directors in the greater LA -Eldia Santana- to give you an inside on how to dress for success.

Success meets appropriate..
We live in a society where people consider their car keys part of the wardrobe simply because they perceive that walking into a renowned restaurant or bar holding the keys to a Lexus, Mercedes, or the new hot Tesla will give people more notoriety than the regular Toyota Corolla. This is the society where we are forming the next generation of leaders, politicians, doctors, and scientists.

So how do you dress for success? Do you have in your closet every expensive brand name, the trendiest style, the most recent collection of Christian Louboutine or Jimmy Choo or the best Armani season collection? It’s simpler than that. In the HR role that I have held for the last two decades, I find myself amazed on how candidates come to our offices to present themselves as the perfect candidates for the career opportunities we have open.

“Dressing for success” is a very subjective concept depending on the field that candidates have chosen as a professional path or simply their environment. What an engineer perceives as the best outfit for a first interview is completely different to what an account will consider.

That is why my advice to young professionals is simply “dress appropriately” for the environment you are going to visit. I completely disregard the statement that “first impressions don’t count” because it’s a false statement. First impressions do matter and the wardrobe that you choose for that first interview will allow you to open the main door; the rest is up to you.  Professionals must present themselves as such; a sanitation professional cannot show up to the first interview wearing dirty and wrinkled clothes, because if he/she cannot maintain his/her personal appearance, how will that person maintain the standards of cleanliness in the facility?

To all this – I believe in dressing appropriately for that first interview, nonetheless, that is only one aspect of it. How well you prepare for the interview, how much you know about the business you are interviewing for, how much confidence you show on that first conversation is what will guarantee you the next move to the second interview and to continue the selection process that will end with the presentation of an employment offer.

Mientras estaba en Nueva York para la reunion de Vanity Fair conocí la organización sin fines de lucro Dress for success que promueve la independencia económica de las mujeres mas desfavorecidas, proporcionando vestimenta profesional, una red de apoyo y las herramientas de desarrollo de carrera para ayudar a las mujeres a prosperar en el ámbito laboral y en la vida. Me sorprendió mucho la bella labor y el arduo trabajo de esta organización y sus miembros.

Normas de vestir para una entrevista .. te puedo dar varios consejos basados en mi experiencia personal en entrevistas de trabajo, mas sin embargo pienso que la opinion de una encargada de recursos humanos especializadas te seran mas utile. A continuación la opinion de la destacada directora de recursos humanos en LA Eldia Santana.

Éxito se encuentra con apropiado ..
Vivimos en una sociedad donde las personas consideran que las llaves de su carro es parte de su vestimenta, simplemente porque perciben que entrar en un restaurante de renombre o un bar con las llaves de un Lexus, Mercedes o el nuevo Tesla les dará más notoriedad que el Toyota Corolla. Esta es la sociedad en la que estamos formando la próxima generación de líderes, políticos, médicos, científicos etc.

Entonces, ¿cómo te vistes para el éxito? ¿Tienes tu armario lleno de marcas caras y al ultimo grito de la moda, la más reciente colección de Christian Louboutine o Jimmy Chooo o lo ultimo de la temporada de Armani? Es mas simple que eso. En mi rol de encargada de recursos humanos durante las ultimas dos décadas, es asombroso la cantidad de candidatos que se presentan a mi oficina con una vestimenta nada apropiada para las oportunidades de carrera que tenemos abiertas.

“Vestirse para el éxito” es un concepto muy subjetivo y depende mucho de el campo al cual pertenezcas y el entorno profesional de la empresa.  Lo que un ingeniero percibe como el mejor traje para una primera entrevista es completamente diferente a lo que percibe un encargado de contabilidad.

Mi consejo para los jóvenes profesionales es simplemente “vestir de manera apropiada” para el medio ambiente que vas a visitar. “La primera impresión cuenta”, las primeras impresiones son importantes y el vestuario que elijas para esa primera entrevista te permitirá abrir la puerta principal, el resto depende de ti. Los profesionales deben presentarse como tales; un profesional no puede presentarse en una primera entrevista de trabajo vistiendo ropas sucias y arrugadas, porque si él / ella no puede mantener  su apariencia personal, ¿cómo va esa persona a mantener los estándares de limpieza en las instalaciones?

A todo esto – yo creo en vestirse adecuadamente para esa primera entrevista, sin embargo, esto es sólo una parte de la misma. Qué tan bien preparado estas para la entrevista, cuánto sabes sobre el negocio o compañía que te está entrevistando, cuánta confianza muestras en esa primera conversación, es lo que va a garantizar que te tomen en cuenta para una segunda entrevista y potencialmente obtengas el trabajo.
