Barahona, located in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, is a region filled with natural wonders and cultural treasures. On my recent trip, I explored three must- visit spots, unforgettable places that highlight the beauty and adventure Barahona has to offer: Villa Mirian, La Plaza, and La Cueva de la Virgen. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, exploration, or spiritual connection, these spots provide a perfect mix of experiences.
Villa Mirian (Balneario Villa Miriam): A Hidden Paradise
Villa Mirian, created in 1970 by Lebanese industrialist Nabij Khoury, is a tranquil retreat nestled in nature. This hidden gem offers a series of natural pools, fed by crystal-clear waters and surrounded by lush greenery. A fee of 500 p/p is required to enter ( about $8 dollar) whcih included also a table.
Some local food is available for purchased, but you can bring your own food and drinks.
La Plaza: A Natural Adventure
Located near La Ciénaga, southwest of Barahona, La Plaza (Balneario La Plaza) is a breathtaking natural spot, known for its crystal-clear waters hidden in a canyon. The sunlight that pierces through the canyon at midday creates a magical experience. Reaching La Plaza is part of the adventure—it’s about two hours by 4×4 and involves a significant hike, but the effort is more than worth it. Once you arrive, you’ll be surrounded by unspoiled nature, making it feel like you’ve discovered a true paradise. It’s recommended to hire a local guide for this trek to ensure safety and enrich the journey with local insights.
My guide was very professional and save, we did both La Plaza and la Cueva de Virgen in one day with him. After the tour he arranged some yummy, local food for our party. Find his information HERE.
La Cueva de la Virgen: A Spiritual Sanctuary in Nature
La Cueva de la Virgen is a mystical cave system located in the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range, formed over millions of years by erosion. Inside the cave, you’ll find stunning rock formations, including stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years, creating a breathtaking sight. The cave also features an underground natural pool, which locals believe has healing properties. Surrounded by towering rock formations, the pool’s serene ambiance offers a spiritual experience like no other.
Exploring La Cueva de la Virgen is not only visually stunning but also deeply immersive. The journey through the cave brings you into a world shaped by the slow passage of time, with each step revealing more of nature’s beauty and mystery.
