Washing away labels |Rompiendo estereotipos

We are all different from one another, specially us women, if you lined up 1000 randomly selected women from different places around the world, you will see that none of us -even from the same place, family, ect- would have the same skin tone, the same curl pattern. Curly hair and skin tone is so magnificent that even if you arrange us from loose curl pattens and from darkest to lightest skin, none of us will look alike. The funny thing is that despite our differences in skin (even from the same country) curl pattern, etc, some people haven’t stopped assigning each other labels to determine the social, political, race, skin color, body shape, and economics.

As an afro-Latina living in California, I know about those labels; the constant look of other Latinos, because I don’t look like them and I certainly don’t speak like most Latinos in California either. Assigning labels is a defense or tool that people use to solve the beautiful and complicated complexity of the environments they perceive.

I don’t like labels and that doesn’t define me either, because that actually determines what people see not who I really am. I know that that person putting the label on me doesn’t know any better. I mean think about it, if someone doesn’t know that Latinas come in a rainbow of color, that I have relatives with very dark skin and some with blond hair and green eyes, then it doesn’t matter what that person thinks of me.

You already know that I am in love with Tide pods because they make laundry easy and effective for me, but now I have another reason to love Tide, because they are encouraging everyone to wash away labels and celebrate their heritage all over social media with the hashtag #WashAwayLabels, they understand  that labels shape more than our perception of color; they also change how we perceive more complex targets, like people. This can’t affect me as a independent confident woman, but for a child, labels can have long term consequences. Labeling is part of our lives and they can be very helpful and positive when you use them the right way, because who doesn’t like to be called: beautiful, friendly, smart, kind, curly girl ? Right?

Todas somos diferentes una de otras, si alineáramos a 1000 mujeres seleccionadas al azar de diferentes lugares del mundo, se ve claramente que ninguna somos iguales -incluso de el mismo país, la misma familia etc, -notaras diferentes colores de piel, rizos, contextura,  en fin de todo. El cabello rizado y el tono de piel es tan maravilloso que aun alineadas por patron de rizos y de color de piel mas oscuro a mas claro aun así seriamos diferentes. Lo curioso es que a pesar de nuestras diferencias en la piel (incluso de un mismo país) patrón de rizo, etc., algunas personas no han dejado de asignar etiquetas (estereotipos) para determinar la situación social, política, raza, color de piel, la forma del cuerpo, y la economía de las personas.

Como afro-Latina en California se de esas etiquetas; etiquetas que me dan aun sin  hablar conmigo y claro, cuando me escuchan la confusion es mas por las etiquetas que tienen en su cabeza, incluso otros Latinos.  El poner etiquetas es una defensa o una herramienta que usa la gente para resolver la complejidad hermosa y complicada de los entornos que perciben.

No me gustan las etiquetas y estas tampoco me definen, solo definen en cierta manera la ignorancia de esa persona. Y es que con la globalización todos deberían de saber que los Latinos somos un arco iris de colores, entonces cuando una persona me pregunta porque hablo Español si mi color de piel es oscura y tengo el cabello rizado, solo me rio y respondo “Es que hablo muchos idiomas a la perfección”

Ya ustedes saben que me encanta los Tide Pods porque hacen la hora del lavado mas fácil y rápido, pero ahora hay una razón mas para amarlos. Tide sabe muy bien que no siempre es bueno etiquetar y que es mas que una percepción de color de piel  y tienen una iniciativa en todas las redes sociales usando el  hashtag  #WashAwayLabels para que todos expresen porque no les gusta las etiquetas. Poner etiquetas no me afecta mucho a mi en particular por mi personalidad fuerte, pero esta practica puede tener consecuencias a largo plazo en los niños. Las etiquetas es parte de nuestras vidas y bien usadas pueden hacer mucho bien porque a quien no le gusta que la llamen; bella, amable, inteligente, hermosa,.. ¿verdad? Estas etiquetas si me gustan…
